<There are some overlapping contents with the previous interviews, so here are some new stuff that I found interesting in the article.  I particularly like the part he talks about nuclear bombs and what he does if the sun is to die soon.>

-How was the Captain Kaneda's emotion reflected in the Japanese version trailer, narrated by Sanada-san?

"I got the request to do it only 2 months before, and I got the English scenario the day before the recording day in Los Angeles.  And they said 'please do it in Japanese,' so I thought 'so does that mean I have to translate it by myself??', but I went to the studio anyway.  While watching the visual, the emotion came back to me, as it was the situation that I immersed myself for several months.  So I recorded the narration, wondering how the captain would send a message to the people left on the earth, while on this mission."

-What is your ideal leader like?

"It is not the time that the leader would supress the members like in feudal times.  In addition, there are various people from various countries with different backgrounds, religions and cultures, in this movie.  I thought the leader should draw out the good points of everyone, accepting different personalities and values, rather than forcing something.

-What was the rationale of the leader being a Japanese?
"I was probably chosen because I was the oldest (laughs).  I thought they needed Asian-style self sacrifice mentality to rationalize his action.  But I thought the way I express it should not be in conversations, but in the eyes he observe crew members or the way he contemplates when he is alone.  Also, the story is about shooting a nuclear bomb into the sun to save the earth.  I may be going too deep, but I thought maybe the captain had a strong feeling to utilize the nuclear bomb for the good of humanity, as a countryman of the only nuclear bomb victims.

-What would you do if the sun was to disappear in a few years?
"I don't want to sit and wait to be extinguished.  There will be lots of panic and fighting among humans, if only a certain number of people would survive.  To prevent such tragedy and to help people keep their hopes, I think culture is more important than military power or politics.  For that purpose, I probably would keep making movies."

-What is your basic idea for keeping acting?
"I became an actor because the movies encouraged me and gave me dreams when I was young.  I want to give back, now that I am in the position to act in it.  In my international work, I sometimes wonder why I dare to jump into something that has a high barrier.  But I think the power of movies now is much more than before, and I come to think that there are certain things that cannot be done by anything other than movies."

-What is the interesting part in this movie?
"It is a huge-scale SFX, but it still depicts humans in details.  And please take a look at Danny Boyle's skill that made this into an entertainment, despite the story is about the pain and sarrow that the biggest enemy of humans are actually humans."

----side note by the reporter----
I was given a precaution by the female PR person of this movie, "everyone comes out from his interview totally melted."  Sure enough, during the interview, Sanada-san answered my questions looking straight at me and picking the word carefully.  I felt shy, even though it was my profession, by his too handsome face and too sincere eyes.  At the end, he offered a handshake. I was so impressed by his warm and soft palm, and he even bowed deeply saying "thank you very much."   I left the interview room, totally melted.
